If you could live in any building in Manhattan, which one would it be? Why?

 

Like lots of people, I’d want to live a year in the Chelsea Hotel. But, like, several years ago.

What is your favorite work of art in a Manhattan museum or gallery?

 

Every time I look up and see the helicopter hanging in MoMA, I think of Paola Antonelli’s dream of acquiring a 747. So my favorite work of art is Paola’s dream.

Favorite interior design of specific shop/building/

house, etc.?

 

So much is so bad. Seems the more people design interiors the worse they get. I’ll say any room in the New York Public Library.

If you were to design a postcard with a specific Manhattan location, where would that be? Why?

 

It would have to be Gramercy Park. We’d borrow a key and photograph it from the inside. It feels huge in there.

Favorite example of interesting outdoor typography (commercial, public, signage, etc) in Manhattan?

 

I like to watch the Pentagram flag change on 5th Avenue.

What are your favorite free places to visit

 in Manhattan?

 

I actually like window shopping in SoHo.

Oh, for a long while nobody knew about The Campbell Apartment secreted in Grand Central Station, but now there’s a sign and everything.

Which Manhattan subway station is your favorite and why?

 

I love the 1,2,3 stop at West 96th Street, cause you get out right in the middle of Broadway. I find that exhilarating.

when you finish a project?

 

Pio Pio – Peruvian Chicken.

Favorite sketching spot?

 

I took my wife still life sketching in Stuyvesant Square years ago. I have the warmest spot for that place ever since.

Where do you find the most iconic graphic

design in Manhattan?

 

Spectacular Vernacular: Deli bags and coffee cups.

Where in Manhattan would you spend your last 10 dollars?

 

At Purl. I’d want to go out making something …

Which park in Manhattan is your favorite?

 

Central Park. Don’t even bother with that question. :)

Where in Manhattan do you go for creative inspiration?

 

I like art supply strores. Sam Flax used to be my go-to; now it’s downstairs to DaVinci Artist Supply.

Where is your office located now?

 

Core77 is on Broadway; SVA is on West 21st Street.

Where in Manhattan do you go when you want to escape the city hustle and enjoy a more natural setting?

 

I go crash the greens in Stuyvesant Town and sit in the sun.

Which block would you tell a friend visiting Manhattan for the first time not to miss? Why?

 

I’d send them to Kiosk Kiosk on Spring. So really it’s a store, not a street.

Where was your first job in Manhattan located?

 

Louis Nelson Associates.

If you could display your best project anywhere in Manhattan, where would you choose to and why?

 

I like interstial spaces; the triangle at the front of the Flatiron Building, or down near Kenmare Square.

Whitney, Central Park, Tiffany’s.

What is your favorite place for design drooling? Why?

 

ABC Carpet jewelry and tabletop section, for gifts.

Which street in Manhattan is in most need of a makeover?

 

Along 3rd Avenue in Murray Hill.

What do you consider the most beautiful building in Manhattan? Why?

 

I actually love the Puck Building, but mostly from the outside.

Best place to take a date in Manhattan?

 

The Four Seasons. Maybe just the bar for a drink. Or the full monty.
